As one of Europe’s and the world’s largest e-commerce markets, France continues to throw its weight around with some of the world’s largest e-commerce heavyweights. In an infographic created by the HiPay team, we breakdown some aspects that made France the 5th largest e-commerce market in the world in 2016.
The surge of m-commerce has seen smartphones in particular become a key channel for online purchases, with 6.6 million French having made a purchase with their phone. This trend continues to grow and retailers have been there to reap the benefits as 62% of the top 50 retailers in the country have a mobile application.
Another key takeaway is the impact of cross-border purchases made by the French. Just fewer than half of the French (46%) made a cross-border purchase in 2016. The top 5 countries with sites making sales in France included Germany, UK, Belgium, USA and China in that order.
The infographic also takes a closer look at exactly how the French pay for their online purchases, showing that most transactions were made using credit card (61%) followed by e-wallets (16%) and bank transfer (11%). However with innovation in the online payment world moving at breakneck speeds, the payment landscape is sure to change in 2017 and the years to come.
